Upgrading to Apple 6 Plus

Just got my Apple iPhone 6 Plus 128GB in Space Grey after two and half months wait. Upgrade is going smooth, but I think it's odd that in order to transfer applications those first have to be copied to iTunes app on my laptop. Why can't there be a list in iCloud, and then install those apps direct from iTunes store?
